Over a third of the people living with cancer in the UK are of working age.
And an additional 100,000 people of working age are diagnosed with the disease each year. 50,000 employees in the UK have a second full time ‘job’ caring for a loved one with cancer. And one in two of us born after 1960 will be diagnosed with the disease during our lifetime.
We know how frightening a diagnosis can be.
And that different people need different help at different times. We also know the value of giving your employees’ emotional and practical needs the same weight as their physical condition. If you want your workforce to have the peace of mind that comes from tailored practical and emotional cancer support, we can take care of that. Or if you want employees with cancer to benefit from an Expert Second Opinion with a specialist in their specific cancer type, we can arrange that too. Whether they’re concerned about cancer or they’re going through treatment and beyond, we’ve got their back and we’ll happily take care of them.
Real-life stories. Real people.
Removing uncertainty, providing reassurance and connecting people to the right info, specialists and resources is Harley Street Concierge’s superpower. Our personal stories speak for themselves.
Harley Street Concierge personal stories
James’ personal story
Life expectancy increased from 2 to 6 years.
James was diagnosed with advanced rectal cancer that had spread to his liver and lung. He wanted help finding a consultant who would be honest yet positive with him. And contacted Harley Street Concierge via his employer’s scheme.
James had a Pathology Review and an Expert Second Opinion with a specialist in his specific cancer type. His medical records were retrieved from multiple NHS and private sites on his behalf and a follow up consultation was arranged.
James continued to have his chemotherapy at his local NHS hospital. But the private consultant we sourced still reviewed his scans, monitored his progress and confirmed his ongoing treatment plan for peace of mind. He subsequently moved to maintenance treatment and estimates of his life expectancy increased from 2 to 6 years.
“James still has chemo at his local NHS hospital. But the private consultant reviews his scans, monitors progress and confirms his treatment plan for peace of mind.”
Adele’s personal story
Hope and comfort for employee’s pregnant daughter.
Diagnosed with an aggressive form of bowel cancer when she was 32 weeks pregnant, 34-year-old Adele was reluctant to pursue an Expert Second Opinion. She didn’t want to hear for a second time that there was very little that could be done for her.
Adele’s father turned to Harley Street Concierge through a scheme provided by his employer. He wanted to understand what options remained for Adele and what the near future might hold.
We supported Adele and her whole family at this intensely emotional time. Cancer specific counselling was arranged and Adele was given a clearer understanding of her specific cancer type before deciding to go ahead with an Expert Second Opinion and have surgery. She chose to be accompanied to her chemotherapy appointments by her Cancer Nurse Specialist.
Adele is now a proud mummy and the whole family continues to receive personalised support from Harley Street Concierge.
“34-year-old Adele was diagnosed with bowel cancer when she was 32 weeks pregnant. Her father turned to Harley Street Concierge through a scheme provided by his employer.”
Daniel’s personal story
From little hope to life-saving surgery
Daniel contacted Harley Street Concierge after being told that nothing more could be done for him. He’d been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive type of cancer that affects the lining of the blood vessels and has a high death rate.
We arranged an Expert Cancer Panel and a DNA analysis of Daniel’s tumour tissue. The cancer panel included leading cardiac specialists, sarcoma specialists, and surgeons from America, Holland and the UK. Their confidence that surgery was possible gave Daniel the reassurance he needed to proceed with a successful operation.
As he hadn’t been able to exercise much, we also connected Daniel to a specialist physiotherapist who helped him regain his lost strength, improve his general fitness and increase his motivation.
“Daniel contacted Harley Street Concierge after being told nothing more could be done for him. He found the reassurance he needed to proceed with a successful operation.”
Claire’s personal story
Emotional support given the same weight as clinical needs.
Claire was diagnosed with grade 2 invasive breast cancer in April 2017. A mastectomy and reconstruction was recommended and this was to be followed by chemotherapy. Claire had access to Harley Street Concierge through her employer. Multiple questions relating to her diagnosis, treatment and side effects were answered and she benefitted greatly from the emotional support on offer. We also helped in finding a plastic surgeon close to where she lived for her reconstruction.
We helped Claire identify a specialist for her post-surgery chemo and she was able to enjoy both her daughter’s hen do and the wedding day itself. More recently, Claire has been well enough to go back to work through a phased return process.
“Claire had access to Harley Street Concierge through her employer. She was able to enjoy her daughter’s hen do and wedding day and has recently been well enough to go back to work.”
Lionel’s personal story
Reassurance that a proposed treatment plan was suitable.
67-year old Lionel contacted Harley Street Concierge after a throat cancer diagnosis. He wanted to be certain his diagnosis was accurate and his proposed treatment plan was the most suitable. Harley Street Concierge collated Lionel’s medical records, scheduled an Expert Second Opinion and arranged for a sample of his tumour tissue to be sent to a specialist for review.
Lionel’s travel from Scotland to London was also organised for him and he was met at the train station by his Cancer Nurse Specialist – a trained healthcare professional with experience in cancer care – who provided an ‘extra pair of ears’ at his consultation.
Lionel was understandably anxious about his London visit and wasn’t sure what to expect. But the Expert Second Opinion soon put his mind at rest. The consultation supported his original NHS treatment plan. Only a small dosage change was recommended and Lionel’s NHS doctor was happy to implement it.
Lionel benefitted from ongoing telephone support from Harley Street Concierge for over a year and continued to have his queries answered and additional treatment options reviewed.
“Lionel was met at the station by his Cancer Nurse Specialist who provided an ‘extra pair of ears’ at his consultation.”
Sarah’s personal story
Upset about potential hair loss in build up to wedding.
When she was diagnosed with breast cancer at 37, Sarah was just months away from getting married. She contacted Harley Street Concierge for a second opinion and it became clear to her Case Manager that she was particularly anxious about the potential side effects of cancer treatment. Specifically, she was upset at the prospect of losing her hair in the run up to her big day.
Having established the emotional significance of potential side effects for Sarah, we arranged an Expert Second Opinion with a specialist who had access to therapies that wouldn’t affect her hair. She was thrilled and agreed to be treated immediately. Sarah’s medical appointments and travel schedule were arranged on her behalf. She responded well to treatment and had a full head of hair on her wedding day.
“Sarah was upset at the prospect of losing her hair. But she responded well to treatment and had a full head of hair on her wedding day.”
